Izmir Governorship

Izmir Governorship is the highest public authority in the province of Izmir. Izmir, the third largest and most populous city, is well known for being the most westernized and European city of Turkey. The Governorship coordinates all activities in Izmir such as education, health, security,criminal jusitce, crisis management, environment, public works, culture, tourism, etc.

The administration in Turkey is based on the principles of centralization and local administration. The administrative services of the country are carried out, besides the central administration, by local administrative organizations such as the provincial administrations (governorships), municipalities and villages. Governorship of İzmir is one of the 81 province governorships of Turkey.

As a State Authority coordinating all public institutions in Izmir, Izmir Governorship also takes the responsibility to work with Izmir Probation Directorate in order to contribute to the social addaptation of convicts in the comminity and working life. The Directorate has got 182 civil servants as staff and 40 of them are working in educational activities. Under responsibility of Izmir Probation Directorate, there are more than 19500 convicts who are serving a sentence under costudy at home, serving a community sentence, released from prison on licence or on parole. Educational activities and programmes for these convicts include vocaitonal, psycological, artistic, theatrical courses and seminars are being held by the staff of the directorate or public education centres' staff.
